The mission of Eleho is to assist the Karen people through three main
avenues: awareness, immediate assistance on the ground, and political
advocacy. We believe each of these will play a vital role in bringing
sustainable peace to the people who have fought for independence for
over half a century.

BOYCOTT THE 2008 CHINA OLYMPICS
- BOYCOTT THE 2008 CHINA OLYMPICS [top]
The
Chinese government has the ability to determine which way current
events in Burma go. If the Burmese military use violence to crush
pro-democracy protests it will be because China exerted insufficient
pressure upon them to back down. Consequently I pledge to boycott all
olympic events both at the stadiums and in broadcast media and any
companies affiliated with the 2008 games in the event of a crackdown by
Burmese military forces.

PANTIES FOR PEACE CAMPAIGN
http://www.lannaactionforburma.blogspot.com/
The Panties for Peace campaign was launched by a group of women
peace activists from a Burmese peace activist group called - Lanna
Action for Burma which is based in Thailand. Since we initiated the
panties for peace campaign for Burma, women’s panties (as well as male
underwear) have been mailed out by activists to Burma’s foreign
missions in Australia, Singapore, and European countries.
Our act of delivering our underwear to the Burmese foreign missions
across the globe is of immense importance and symbolic in protest of
Myanmar junta’s violent crackdown of monks-led rallies in Yangon last
month, and to oust the generals ruling the country from power.
Lanna Action for Burma organized the action dubbed “Panties for Peace”
and we have been sending and delivering the panties this week and will
be doing so over the next few days, weeks and months. One of the main
reasons for which we are encouraging people to send out their panties
to Burma’s foreign missions is because the generals ruling Myanmar are
superstitious and they believe that touching panties or the traditional
women’s outfit sarong will eliminate their powers.
This campaign is a chance for you as a woman to take away the power
of the military junta by sending your knickers to Burmese embassies
which is a culturally insulting gesture of protest against the brutal
crackdown there which received worldwide condemnation for violently
suppressing the pro-democracy protest on September 26th & 27th,
2007 resulting in a number of deaths. The junta also ordered the
arrests of protest leaders, including Buddhist monks.
Our website with more details, updates, and a listing of Burmese embassies can be found at http://www.lannaactionforburma.blogspot.com/

8.8.08 FOR BURMA CAMPAIGN
http://www.8808forburma.org/
8-8-08 for Burma aims to bring about an end to the ethnic and political
repression in Burma. Our strategy is to use the 2008 Olympics to draw
attention to the special relationship between Burma and China, which
is host of the 2008 Olympics and possesses unique potential to encourage
a resolution of the human rights crisis in Burma.

BOYCOTT SWIFT CAMPAIGN
SWIFT manages a global network of over 7,500 financial institutions in
200 countries, allowing money to be transferred between them. It is
like an international postal system for money.
In November 2003, the US introduced "financial transaction sanctions"
against Burma. This stopped the Junta from transferring their local
currency into dollar accounts, hindering their ability to trade and buy
weapons. The US Campaign for Burma estimate this would cost the Junta
up to $450 million per year.
However, just three months after the US sanctions were imposed, SWIFT
allowed four Burmese banks to join its network. This allowed them to
start trading again, by transferring their funds as euros and other
currencies that are easier to spend than the Burmese kyat.
Based in Belgium, SWIFT is run as a cooperative by a 25-member board of
directors. Representatives from JPMorganChase and Citibank are on the
SWIFT board of directors.
You can read more here: http://newstandardnews.net/content/index.cfm/items/166
THE ACTION:
Request that your bank perform international transactions via methods
other than SWIFT - your transactions, your company's transactions and
ideally as many transactions as practically possible.
THE AIM:
Pressure SWIFT to halt transactions to and from banks in Burma until
the Junta is removed and genuine democracy is in place. This will
financially isolate the Junta and prevent them from making the
transactions necessary to continue funding their regime.
WHY IT WILL WORK:
This action will cut off the Junta and keep them from spending their
money to buy weapons, guns, bullets, trucks, fancy weddings etc. It is
something they will CARE about. If it can be demonstrated that SWIFT
will lose a substantial chunk of its income because it has allowed the
Junta to circumvent US financial transaction sanctions, there will be a
compelling argument to block these banks from using its network. This
action will be much quicker than the slow diplomatic process currently
underway to discourage the Junta.
HOW TO DO IT:
1. Contact your bank asking them how you can transfer funds without
using SWIFT. This will make them aware the public care about the issue
and identify alternative money-transfer methods. Banks all over the
world use SWIFT - this is something everyone worldwide can get involved
with!
2. Contact the 25 board members of SWIFT asking them to block transactions to the banks in Burma.
3. Small companies - please consider becoming "Burma friendly" by
performing your international money transfers via a non-SWIFT method.
4. Those in EU countries - raise petitions and write to your EU
representatives pressing for financial transaction sanctions in the EU.
Currently there are selective investment sanctions; this is not enough!
5. Write to Belgium's government asking why they are permitting SWIFT to support the Burmese Junta
THINGS TO REMEMBER:
1. Be positive and appeal to people's better nature - those listening
to your message will be much more likely to consider your ideas if you
present them with ways to help, rather than an attack or insults.
2. SWIFT's involvement in Burma once the Junta are gone will be
extremely valuable to the population - free flow of funds will be vital
to re-build the country. Don't alienate them. They only have to block
these banks until the regime is changed.
